UC Davis Gamelan Ensemble

Gamelan on Delta porch

For the last four years I’ve had the pleasure of playing traditional West Javanese music with the UC Davis Gamelan Ensemble. It’s the only music I’ve ever been comfortable playing with and for other people, and it’s introduced me to a new culture, a new scholastic department and career trajectory, and a bunch of rad fellow students.

This song is a traditional combo, “Kawitan/Bedaya,” performed at Delta of Venus in Davis a couple weeks ago for our spring recital. There’s a video of a modern song here: “Overture” video.

Note: As I type this, I’m watching the Cambodia episode of “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” with my cousins, and they’ve used gamelan for the background music!
