Summer Glows

Olympia house show

When Ian and I were living in Olympia last summer, we saw a lot of bands. 134, to be exact. And so many of them weren’t trying to get record deals and “make it” — some didn’t even want to record anything or tour anywhere. They just play music for the sake of playing with and for their friends and having fun.

Taking that mindset a step further, I realized I could record my own music, and people wouldn’t have to like it, or even hear it. I could do it just for me.

So while Ian channeled all the inspiration of such a musically rich town into a song-a-day recording project — which he finally made available in its entirety on the sixteen-sixteen bandcamp last week — I recorded just one. I had started the song about a year before, and I finally had the motivation to finish and record it.

I recorded the Casio PK-1 through my laptop’s internal microphone and my voice through Sony headphones as a microphone. I hope you like it, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t! I like it, and its original recipient who I wrote it about likes it, and that’s all that matters to me.DAM Haus in Davis

Well, I like it. Especially extra keyboard part in the middle.

[…] The end product is a goofy musical sketchbook, with few completed thoughts but something I would like to send out into the universe anyway. I mostly used that Casio PK-1 on top (that elephant keyboard, while the cutest, was garbage). By the end of the 19th day I was ready to attempt something more ambitious — that recording was the prototype of this song. […]
